About Jin:
Are you carrying a kind of pain that feels hard to describe, where you feel unheard or misunderstood? Maybe it feels like no one fully understands where the pain comes from or how intense it really is. You deserve to be seen and heard. My role is to be someone you can reach toward when things feel overwhelming, and to help you put words to what you are experiencing. You do not have to figure it all out on your own.
Hi, I’m Jin Kim. I’m in my final year at Columbia University School of Social Work, where I’m pursuing my Master of Social Work degree. I also work full-time at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services’ Suicide Prevention Center. Over the past nine years, I’ve worked as a Crisis Counselor, Shift Supervisor, and Program Coordinator, supporting people through moments of intense emotional pain, suicidal thoughts, crisis, and uncertainty. That work has taught me how important it is to feel genuinely heard, especially when what you are going through feels difficult to explain to the people around you.
I immigrated to the United States from Korea when I was seven years old and grew up learning how to adapt to a different culture while still holding onto where I came from. I also understand firsthand how racism, cultural expectations, and stigma around mental health can shape the way we see ourselves and whether we feel comfortable asking for help. These experiences influence the way I approach therapy and the importance I place on understanding you within the context of your culture, relationships, family, and environment.
In therapy, I want us to be able to look honestly at what brought you to where you are today without reducing you to a diagnosis or a problem that needs to be fixed. We can unpack your experiences, understand the patterns and circumstances that have shaped you, and talk about where you want to go from here. Together, we can work toward a path forward that makes sense for you and aligns with the future you want for yourself. I work with teens, adults, couples, and families, and sessions are available in both English and Korean.
