About Melanie:

Welcome, my name is Melanie. I'm glad you are here.

My journey as a social welfare graduate student stems from experience, acceptance, and the evolving nature of what it means to be an Asian American in the context of different environments. I am a first-generation Vietnamese/Chinese-American born in Virginia and raised in the Bay Area and Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City. As the youngest daughter, sister, and aunt to a large family, I deeply relate to the joys and challenges of belonging.

My experiences both domestically and abroad informed this concept that collectively we construct shared customs and rituals that are rich but diverse across regions. It is a beautiful, powerful, and complicated experience to individually define what values shape and guide our paths while recognizing how societal factors influence the terrain. Moving through the complexities of one’s intersectional identity and deepening acceptance and knowledge of oneself can require time, support, and compassion. You do not have to be alone in this process. 

As we get to know one another, we will cultivate an open and brave space. I hope to hold space wherein you feel at ease to open up at your own pace. You will lead the way. I am here to remind you that abundant truths exist within your story.

I hope to support you in exploring your lived experiences, deepening your awareness of your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, and addressing external challenges with respect and without judgment. We will learn how to navigate the unknown by cultivating mindfulness, defining values, and figuring out how to align actions with the interest of your wellbeing and goals. My intention is to work with you to tap into the abundant wisdom of your inner child in order to acknowledge the needs, wants, and understanding of your present self.
